World-Habitat-Day in Shanghai and Peking, China
On 4 October World Habitat Day was celebrated in Shanghai, Beijing, China, under the theme "Better City, Better Life".
World Habitat Day is meant to encourage us to think about how to achieve a better sustainable development for our communities and cities and the right of everyone to adequate housing.
Peter Götz, in his capacity as President of the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat (GPH), was invited by the Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Dr. Anna Tibaijuka, to hold a speech before the visitors of the World Expo in Shanghai in honour of this day. In his speech on 7 October, he described his view of the role of parliamentarians in the World Urban Campaign, an organisation recently founded by UN-Habitat.
Götz also represented the Global Parliamentarians on Habitat at the 6th Steering Committee Meeting of the World Urban Campaign, which took place from 8 to 10 October 2010 in Shanghai, China. The main outcome of the Steering Committee Meeting was the reaching of an agreement on the structure and goals of the World Urban Campaign. Beyond that, elections for the positions of Chairman and Vice-Chairman were held.
